Zooey Deschanel insists stories claiming that to become a celebrity in Los Angeles means having to be ‘beautiful and lose weight’ are “lies”.
It’s no secret that some stars have previously admitted being in the spotlight puts pressure on them to diet, or completely change their appearance – but Zooey says she’s never seen or heard of it herself – despite growing up in LA.
“Don’t believe the LA lies,” she advised Company readers. “I grew up here, and it’s funny to me when people talk about the pressure to be skinny in LA, because I’ve never once had anybody tell me to lose weight, and I don’t think you have to be anorexic to be successful.”
Zooey says the stereotypical ‘Hollywood look’ is unrealistic, and wants people to use healthy “real people” like herself as role-models – rather than try and live up to the person they think they should be.
“I think it’s important to be a healthy person because, if you’re on TV, there will be people looking up to you,” she explained.
“As an actress, I’m playing real people, and real people don’t look like Beverly Hills housewives!”
In her sitcom New Girl – Zooey plays a quirky geek, who doesn’t care what other people think of her.
