Beyonce Becomes The Subject Of A University Course

Believe it or not, but students at Rutgers University in New Jersey can now take a course on the queen of R&B, Beyonce.

Lecturer and PHD student Kevin Allred at The Department Of Women’s and Gender Studies, is offering students the chance to look at the Countdown star’s cultural and political impact, in the Politicizing Beyoncé class.

According to the Huffington Post, the singer’s lyrics and videos will be compared with the works of American author Alice Walker and women’s right activist Sojourner Truth

Speaking on the University’s official website, Allred says: “This isn’t a course about Beyoncé’s political engagement or how many times she performed during President Obama’s inauguration weekend.

“She certainly pushes boundaries. While other artists are simply releasing music, she’s creating a grand narrative around her life, her career, and her persona.”

“Of course, there are people who’ll say, ‘You’re not black. You’re not a woman’,” Kevin continued. “It’s something I’m always questioning and staying aware of so as not to overstep any bounds or make any claims for a group that I don’t belong to.

“It’s a fine line and I want to remain respectful of that.”
