Ed Sheeran certainly has friends in high places. Not only is he close to country mega-star Taylor Swift, but he also receives weekly phone calls from legendary British singer Sir Elton John.
In February of this year, the 22-year-old was chosen by the ‘Rocket Man’ star to perform a duet with him at the Grammys, and Ed admits Elton has become a good friend and a mentor since he first met the musical legend.
“Elton (John)’s continually surprising me with how much he (cares),” Sheeran told People. “He’ll ring me weekly just to be like, ‘Don’t give up. Do this single. I know you want to do this but do this.’
“For him to take so much interest in my projects is really flattering and humbling,” the British singer-songwriter added.
Sheeran recently revealed he had a hard time getting into the music industry because labels didn’t like his “chubby and ginger” image, but he also admits it’s not just the rejection by record companies that can leave him feeling low.
“(It’s hard) realizing that not everyone is going to like you” Ed confessed, adding that he’s learned to accept that it’s impossible to please everyone.
“People hate you without meeting you and there’s nothing you can do about it,” he explained. “There’s no way you can sit them down and have a pint (to) show them that you’re an alright guy.”
Sheeran recently admitted he found rumors that he and best friend Taylor Swift were dating flattering, because he didn’t expect people to actually believe a girl like her would date someone like him.
“My mates believed it. And my mates are texting me being like, ‘Is it true?’ So I said it wasn’t but the fact that people can believe it makes me feel like a bit of a stud, you know?” he told SBTV’s NCS.
“I’ve got to be honest because one of my best friends (Harry Styles) did date her. I’m not that kind of guy. But the fact that people believed it impressed me a little bit.”
Ed recently completed writing his second album and will soon be heading into the studio to record his new songs, with the aim of releasing the CD early in 2014.
